I almost walked out of my office today quitting my job. What I found frustrating about my job in the last few years is that my boss, though a nice lady, doesn’t actually listen. She accuses me of arguing because I don’t want to get my work done. The work she proposes has to do with understanding the company’s products.
Now, I’ve been with that company for four years this month. I know the basics to most of their products. In fact, I was the one who created 90% of the manuals for their products. However, since about two years ago, I’ve been asking my boss for further specifications and mechanics of the products. The reason is so I can get a better grasp at the products. Therefore, when I do market them out, I know what I am talking about and I would have further knowledge to back up that marketing.
The problem is that my boss resists every attempt for me to get that information. Her reason has to do with two things: 1) the factory refuses to supply important data to safeguard their ‘secrets’ and 2) it is my job to research on the net the information I need. Which as you can see, is ludicrous. What infuriated me even more was that she compared me to a manager at another company, whom had worked at that company far longer than I and not only that, has had the opportunity to directly interact with the people in the industry to get that information. I, on the other hand was hired in to be their creative designer. It seems quite ‘unfair’ that I must be put through these accusations, when all she has been doing is resist all my attempts to get information.
My boss is a nice lady, but she frustrates me. I do admit one thing though: I have become more lazy in terms of designing our manuals. That I can brush up on, but if she needs me to do any constructive marketing, I need specifications, details and the mechanics of our products. I told her that it’s one thing to be a cookie cutter salesperson, but if anyone really want to compete on the market, they need more authority in what they want to do. Information is power. Right now, it seriously feels like I’ve been given a gun that barely know how to use, to go into a war, that I am not trained to do. Her excuse: “You need to do more research.”
So I have to research other companies to find out more about our own products. That doesn’t help.
[sigh]
Alas, she’s the one putting food on the table for my parents, so to speak. I’ll brush up on my laziness on manuals and apply more ‘detail’, but in the meantime, I’m just going to drink to my heart’s desire, until 2:30, where I have to go to bed and then drive my dad to work in the morning.
Kids, if you don’t want to end up like me, I suggest you don’t waste your youth on petty pursuits as I did. Sure, building character is one thing, but without stability, character is shit.
PS: that creature is called a “Sproing”. Lively bug-like winged creature that likes to dance with its own babies. It’s their form of communication, much like the dancing bees do these modern times.four
