Song: “Comfortably Numb” — Pink Floyd

I hadn’t dreamed in a while, at least not one I could remember. This one returned like a flood.

It began in the backseat of a car with a woman I knew but won’t name. The moment was slow, tender — full of miniature kisses, touches, quiet warmth in a fogged-up car. Her skin was sun-touched, her body real and human. The air felt cool but the heat between us kept rising.

Then the dream folded into another — a morning on a private cruise ship, the South China Sea glittering under the sun. Friends laughed over lemonade and sandwiches. Two worlds flickered back and forth — one of intimacy, one of calm — until both merged.

The ship was hijacked by a faction of the Japanese Extreme Right, dressed in World War II uniforms with swords at their waists. Fear rippled through us. I worried most for the women — what they might suffer. My mind kept slipping between the car, where we were making love, and the deck, where we were prisoners.

In one timeline, her breath caught as I moved inside her; in the other, I was planning how to save everyone without becoming a killer.

I gathered my friends. “There are seven of us,” I said. “Four of them. Each pair takes one, pushes him overboard. No blood, just water.” I couldn’t bring myself to imagine a knife.

I don’t know if the plan succeeded. The last thing I remember was the ship drifting toward Mount Fuji, the sunset bleeding gold behind it. Tears ran down my face as I said, “If we can just get them off, we can make it to Taiwan.”

Then silence.

I woke at 9:38 p.m., drifted back into other dreams I couldn’t recall, and finally rose near three in the morning — brushing my teeth, feeling like I’d stepped into another country that just happened to be my own apartment.

Maybe the dream meant this: that love and danger, lust and responsibility, often share the same breath. And sometimes, when you survive both, you wake up foreign to yourself.

  1. I didn’t read that huge dream interpretation, so if I am just repeating it in smaller words, I apologize.

Maybe it meant that you want a relationship with this unnamed girl, but there are alot of outside interferences that make such a thing impossible. The interferences being of course, ties to friends you’ve had for years and years.

    Or maybe I’m a moron.

  2. No I believe that was your fantasy… Her arms were tentacles in that fantasy of your’s. I agree. Mhm.

  3. According to my dream interpretation book, this dream represents your desire to have sex with a female pirate…one that has an eye patch and a wooden leg.

  4. Your dream interpretation seems pretty accurate for the separate elements. Now I just have to piece them together. 8]

  5. Mmm…. according to my dream book your dream means this….

Intercourse represents your wish or need to be able to communicate with the girl who you do not mention on a very intimate level. The car is a representation of our own person space, an extention of our being. To dream of being in a car usually alerts us to our own motivation. It can also stand for spiritual direction and motivation. Your friends signify one or two things. Firstly we need to look at our relationship with that particular person, and secondly we need to decide what that friend represents for us (for instance security, support and love). In dreams friends often highlight a particular part of our personality that we need to look at, perhaps understand or come to terms with, in a different way. Also we can continue on our spiritual search in the knowledge that you are supported. The boat /cruiser indicates how we cope with our own emotions and those of others. It may well represent how we navigate our way through life and whether we are in control of our lives. Boats also represent our attitude to death and the final journey. They can also represent fertility and adventure. War in dreams always denotes conflict. And would suggest that we need to be more conscious of the effect our actions will have on others. We also need to be aware that we are taking part in a conflict which deliberately engineered rather than spontaneous. War is a symbol of spiritual disintegration. We need to be aware of what is disintegrating within our lives to understand the full symbolism. The time indicates change and the fear of rape and torture could be that we are avoiding, or attempting to avoid, issues to do with closeness and bonding. A mountain usually appears in order to symbolize an obstacle which needs to be overcome. We all have difficulties to face in life often it is how we face those difficulties that is important. The symbol of the mountain offers many alternatives and choices. This means we can work out, through dreams ,our best course of action in everyday life. Representing the centre of our existence in earthly terms, the mountain is an image that can be worked on over and over again .
